Dave Fields is one of the most dazzling, cutting-edge guitarists on the scene today. He grew up in NYC, the son of famed composer Sammy Fields, and it wasn’t unusual for him to see guys such as Stevie Wonder and Rupert Holmes in his father’s studio. A nanny from Waycross, GA, introduced him to the soul of Southern culture, and these varied influences are evident throughout his music.
His latest release, entitled “All In,” is simply a guitar-lover’s dream. He incorporates nine originals with two unusual covers herein, each showcasing a different shade of Dave’s blues. The opening cut is a sweet taste of things to come, as Dave wrings out an ethereal solo before breaking into a tale of perserverance and “rollin’ with the Changes In My Life,” which features another hot solo mid-song. Vladimir Barsky’s organ augments Dave’s soulful vocal on the story of the kind of girl we’ve all known–the one where “one look and you’re hooked” with those “Voodoo Eyes.” He revisits this theme later on in a cool song done in stop-time, SRV-style, the staccato strut of “that girl’, She Got A Hold On Me.”
Let’s get to the favorites. “Cross Road” is indeed the Robert Johnson classic, and Dave delivers it here as a near-Hill-Country stomp, with his guitar setting up a trance-like “wall of sound” over Kenny Soule’s stompin’ beats. Next is a live recording from Norway, as Dave strips down Led Zep’s “Black Dog” to its base, bare-bones elements, and we simply couldn’t get enough of it done this way! At the opposite end of Dave’s blues spectrum is the highly-contagious groove of “Let’s Go Downtown, where they play the blues,’ as he name-checks landmarks all over his hometown, “from Harlem south to Union Square!”

Dave Fields is one of those rare bluesmen who never ceases to amaze with his deep passions for rock, blues, and soul. With “All In,” we will close with this—somewhere out there, Jimi and Stevie Ray are smiling their approval….Until next time…Sheryl and Don Crow, Nashville Blues Society.

Summer Is Here!

Here I am in my Lower East Side apartment in New York City and I’m looking out the window of my NYC recording studio (which is 12×5′!) onto an amazing Manhattan landscape. Seward Park is below me and in the background is the Manhattan bridge, the Verizon building, the court houses and the soon to be finished Freedom Tower.

It’s morning and the air is perfect on this last day of May. The summer is in its infancy and with that feeling I’m looking forward to this summer in particular!

I’ve just launched this website and my new CD “All In” AND I’m about to embark on some really cool shows. June 14th I will be performing in Lviv Ukraine at The Alfa Jazz Festival where I will be headlining the Stage on Rynok Square. Now I know what you’re thinking, “is Dave out of his mind for going to Ukraine?!!!”. Well… I might be out of my mind but rest your mind assured, the band and I are flying in from Warsaw Poland and Lviv is in the western most part of Ukraine where things are quiet. Also, I am so excited to have the the opportunity to connect with Ukrainian music fans. I’m not going to let the situation in Ukraine stop me from spreading some love through music over there.

When I come back I will be hosting the jam at The Stanhope House on Tuesday June 17th and immediately after the jam I will be part of The Stanhope House R&B Reviews first ever video that’s being shot at The Stanhope House 45 Main St Stanhope NJ as a featured guest! That’s gonna be cool!

My first “All In” CD release, or pre CD release party will June 20th at FONTANA’s 105 Eldridge St NY NY featuring the opening acts CW BLUES PROJECT, LUBA DVORAK and special guests Dan Cazio and Amy Coleman. Then I will be doing a NJ pre CD release party/jam at The Stanhope House June 24th then I’m off to Europe!

July 4th I will be at The Trandal Blues Festival (and I’m working on some more dates you find out about by clicking here). Then I fly back to the US and I’m playing Maplewoodstock July 12th, a show in Staten Island honoring the late Mamie Smith July 20th then I fly with my lovely wife Judy for her first ever trip to Norway and July 25th I’m at Skjærgårds Bluesfestival in Smøla Norway. The big one this summer is August 2nd where I will be performing at The Notodden Blues Festival, perhaps the biggest blues festival in Scandinavia!

August is looking like fun too with trips to The Rusty Nail in Wilmington NC and Florida, although I usually take time off to be with Judy and my son Jasper!

There’s a LOT more but let me stop with this! Don’t forget you can always read my article in Big City Blues Magazine every two months when it comes out and you can always keep track of me by going to the full Dave Fields website and my Facebook sites (listed on the side bars)!

Thanks so much for checking out what I’ve been doing! I hope to see you soon at one of my shows!!!

Dave Fields New CD “ALL IN” 32 Weeks in the Top 10 RMR Blues Rock Charts

ALLin_DaveFields_COVER

ALL IN was in the top 5 of The Roots Music Report Blues Rock Charts from August 25th 2014 to February 22nd 2015!

ALL IN features 11 songs produced by Dave: 9 originals an, a funky ‘live’ version of Led Zep’s “BLACK DOG” and a burning rendition of the timeless classic “CROSSROAD”.

ALL IN was recorded mostly live in the studio. It features many of the same musicians on Dave’s first three CD’s TIME’S A WASTIN’, ALL WOUND UP & DETONATION: Andy Huenerberg (bass), Kenny Soule (drums), Vladimir Barsky (keys), Dave Moore (drums) and some new comers: Tony Tino (bass) and special guest BMA nominee Dave Keyes (piano).

There are many different flavors of Dave featured on this CD. The rockin’-fatalistic “Changes In My Life” starts off the CD with a scintillating guitar solo that zooms off into the clouds. Dave blazes away on the spooky-rock “Voodoo Eyes” which will take you to a place where classic rock legends dwell. “Let’s Go Downtown” will get you “boogie-in” your seat while the surreal-lamenting “Dragon Fly” drifts through layers of realities. ALL IN winds down a road that will take you to your limit and then drop you in a place that will make you say, “Oh Yeah!”

Gearing Up For The Warmer Weather & The Stanhope House & more!

Wow, there’s so much that’s been going on, so much to tell!

I’m so excited that the winter is finally abating and the warmer weather is heading for NYC! This was an especially tough winter here in the Northeast US however I wasn’t in the Northeast that much the past few months! It’s amazing to me that in the middle of February when I was in Longyearbyen Svalbard (Spitzbergen) it was colder in NYC!

Don’t miss the jam at The Stanhope House sponsored by Big City Blues Magazine and hosted by myself featuring The Johnny Charles Band and a special guest every Tuesday night. Its been so much fun! If you haven’t been to The Stanhope House its one of the oldest blues joints in the US, its been around since the early 1800’s (well… they had a different sort of blues music back then!)

I will be at a brand new venue in NJ Ranchero Cantina 214 Kinderkamack RD Emerson NJ the first Saturday of the month (May 3rd and June 7th)

I’m happy to announce that I will be returning to Norway July 4th to perform at TRANDAL BLUES FESTIVAL and Skjærgårds Bluesfestival July 25th in Smøla and more shows in the works which I will list as the dates come in.

I recently was in the studio recording with the legend and my soul brother Delmar Brown and I’m thrilled with what we just recorded. I’m hopeful that you readers can check out what we’ve been up to soon.

You can always check out more about what I’m doing in the bimonthly issue of Big City Blues Magazine.

There’s more to come! To quote the great Ray Redniss, stay tuned! LOL!

Dave Fields Takes Norway by Storm with New Norwegian, European Band

Dave Fields recent Norwegian tour last October was bolstered by his new Norwegian band: drumming sensation Kåre Amundson & “wall of bass master” Bjørn Hagset.
